The term ?unemployable? has become commonplace in the last few years as a result of poor economic conditions around the globe. Often times, the term ?unemployable? is used [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] to describe a class of people who have been unemployed for so long that they are now considered unemployable. In [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] other words, companies don?t look favorably on hiring people who don?t already have another job. The socio-cultural implications of this condition are far reaching, and sadly, are not likely to change any time soon.
I am unemployable for an entirely different set of reasons. I became unemployable the day I figured out that I could no longer accept the status quo of university politics. I wasn?t willing to simply do as I was told without asking questions, or attempting to solve a problem without being able to think outside the box. That was the same day I realized I was an entrepreneur. I am an idealist and my inner spirit was dying to be unleashed.
Close to the same time that I had this revelation, an opportunity to open a mental health agency in the small town in which I lived, presented itself as the chance I was looking for. After 14 years of teaching at the college level, I walked away from my tenured position and jumped feet first into a brand new adventure. Business was good, albeit not without [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] challenges. I learned a tremendous [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] amount about forming a small business, people management, budgets, contracting, and project development. Most importantly, however, I learned about [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] people in general. I learned that friendship was not enough [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] when push came to shove and I needed people to take a [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] stand or to support an ideology when it wasn?t established by the good ole? boy network. Too many were afraid of the repercussions politically and otherwise. The good old status quo reared it?s ugly head again. Before I recognized it as such, however, I couldn?t understand why people wouldn?t stand up and ?do the right thing.? Then it dawned on me that I?m the one who is different. I?m one of the few who is willing to stand up at the risk of losing it all. I am unemployable!
Just recently, my business partner and I decided to close our agency. The political battles became too many. We simply were not interested in engaging in petty turf wars with our peers when there was plenty of work to go around. We were also not interest in reporting our every move to the state agency who had ultimate control over all the funding for behavioral health programs in the State of New Mexico. That state agency became known around the office as ?Big [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Brother.? Scary! Unfortunately, we believe it is a sign of the future and the direction of health care reform. Pretty soon, people won?t be able to seek counseling because they have a need to do so. They?ll have to jump through all the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] referral hoops and pray for an approval from their insurance companies.
Theoretically, my partner and I were out of work. A lot of people probably would have panicked. They would have started asking the dreaded questions: Now what? Where can I get a job? Who will hire me? I just couldn?t let myself go there. If I dared to think any of those questions, even for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] a brief moment, I felt sick to my stomach. Working for someone else simply wasn?t an option. I am unemployable!
The thing about being an entrepreneur is that you are [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in control of your own destiny. You decide what type of business you?re going to run, how many hours you?re going to work at it, and when and where you?re going to do the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] work. You?re highly motivated to succeed because your livelihood and your future depend on it. You are your own best employee. No one will care about your business as much as you do. In my eyes, being ?unemployable? isn?t the end of the world. Instead, I have the whole world in front of me, and I get to decide what to do with it. I pity the people who are ?unemployable? because they?ve been unemployed for too long they lack the vision to become unemployable for the right reasons.
